The process of reviewing Guernsey's strategic priorities has begun.
Following the General Election earlier this year, the Policy Council decided to postpone the annual parliamentary review of the States Strategic Plan, which was due to be debated in the autumn, in order to give members of the new States Assembly an opportunity to work together in order to develop their own strategic issues and priorities.
Members of the Policy Council began this process at a two-day informal meeting on 27 and 28 July, held to identify and discuss key strategic issues that will need to inform the review of the States Strategic Plan. The Policy Council's various policy groups will now be asked to develop those issues and to identify potential outcomes for further discussion and review.
Later this year, all States Members will have the opportunity to participate in a 'blue skies' session, to discuss the range of strategic issues and possible outcomes identified by the Policy Council. The views and comments expressed by the States Members during that workshop will then be taken into consideration by the Policy Council in the preparation of the draft Review of the States Strategic Plan.
States Members will have a further opportunity to discuss that draft before it is finalised for presentation to the States of Deliberation in March 2013.
The Chief Minister, Deputy Peter Harwood, said:
"The General Election earlier this year saw a significant number of new members elected to the States, challenging any notion that the new Assembly would simply assume the strategic priorities of the previous one. The Policy Council strongly believes that members of the new States Assembly need the time and space necessary to work together to discuss the strategic issues facing the Island and develop priorities accordingly, and I am pleased to report that this process has now begun".
