Friday 14 September 2012

Following careful consideration of the Milk Price Review by the independent Milk Price Review Panel in July of this year, the Commerce and Employment Department advises that the retail price of milk from the Guernsey Dairy will rise by 3p per litre on 7 October 2012.

From that date the fixed price for a litre pack of Guernsey Dairy milk will be 108p in shops and on doorsteps.

The new retail prices for milk sold locally will become:-

The price changes implement, in full, recommendations from the independent Milk Price Review Panel which considered submissions from, and had discussions on milk pricing and factors affecting the supply chain with, the key dairy industry stakeholder groups.

Minister for the Commerce and Employment Department, Deputy Kevin Stewart, said:

"This is my first year as Minister of this Department, and I have been impressed to see the care and attention to detail used by the Milk Price Panel in arriving at their recommendations.

They have a difficult task balancing the understandable needs and wishes of various parties for increases in revenue, with the need to hold back retail prices to assist consumers.

I believe that after this modest increase our excellent quality locally produced milk is still available at a realistic price for Island customers."

Additional Notes:

The Milk Price Review Panel (MPRP) was created in 2007 by States resolution, to give independent advice to the Department on milk pricing.

The Panel advertised in the local media and invited submissions from any resident or business that wished to provide a view.

The Panel specifically invited the farmers, the milk distributors, and the Dairy to submit cost and budget information in confidence and to meet to discuss the need or otherwise for milk price changes.

At the time of the formation of the MPRP, the Department gave a clear commitment that it would implement all of its recommendations unless there appeared to be exceptional circumstances suggesting that the proposals should be modified in some way.
