Friday 15 February 2013
The Billet d'Etat, which will be published on 15 February, includes a report asking the States to approve the drafting of the legislation for the Rolling Electronic Census Project.
This legislation is necessary to ensure that the automated system is compliant with the Data Protection Law. It will define the measures that will be put into practice to ensure the security of people's data when it is centrally collated.
The invitation to tender for the IT system is open until the 15 February and a supplier will be selected prior to the March States Debate, so that delivery can commence swiftly following the Debate.
These steps in the project plan are on schedule and it is anticipated that, as well as the immediate benefits the project will deliver for the States, it will also benefit family history researchers in the future. Amanda Bennett, Chief Librarian at the Priaulx Library said,
"The census is an important resource for genealogists, students and academics in a range of fields. It provides a window on the past in an immediate and easily accessible way quite unique amongst historical sources. It allows the researcher to see family relationships and dynamics, socio-economic status, place of origin, and many other details not easily found elsewhere. The Rolling Electronic Census system is being designed to enable researchers of the future to continue to access similar information."
The next edition of the Annual population bulletin, which contains basic information on the population demographic, births, deaths immigration and emigration, will be available in March 2013 via www.gov.gg/population.
