The Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission has agreed to make a donation of £25,000 from its Disaster Emergency Relief budget to the Disaster Emergency Committee Syrian Appeal which was launched yesterday, Wednesday 20 March 2013.
The Commission has been following events in Syria and its border regions very closely as it recognised that the humanitarian situation in this region was worsening by the week.
The Commission is aware that because of the political situation in Syria it is difficult and often unsafe for many aid agencies to work within the country itself. It sincerely hopes that through the continuing efforts of the UN, many humanitarian agencies and through the DEC the desperate situation so many Syrian people find themselves in will be resolved.
In January 2013, the Commission donated a further £25,000 to the UNICEF Syrian Appeal (http://www.unicef.org.uk/landing-pages/donate-syria).
Mr. Tim Peet, M.B.E., the Commission's Vice Chairman, said,
"The Commissioners have been aware since making the donation to UNICEF's Syrian Appeal that it was a question of when the DEC would launch this appeal rather than if. We have all seen the images on our televisions over recent weeks of the truly desperate plight of so many ordinary Syrian people who find themselves displaced and without adequate shelter and clothing.
We are confident that this donation, on behalf of the people of Guernsey, will go some way to bringing about some relief for these people."
