Clarification of intentions regarding Residents Parking Scheme

Thursday 11 April 2013

Following recent publication of a list of revised fees and charges for certain functions currently undertaken by the Environment Department's Traffic and Transport Services Unit and subsequent discussions with certain media, there would appear to be a need for the Department to clarify the existing position in relation to charging for Residents Parking Permits.

The Department currently administers two Residents Parking Schemes (Standard and Enhanced) in St Peter Port that enables residents living within certain streets, by permit, to overstay existing disc parking restrictions. At present, there is no charge for the issuing of these permits. However, the Department is currently in the process of drafting a States Report detailing proposals to revise and extend the current scheme and to introduce a charge of £75.00 for the issuing of three-year permits. The implementation of the £75.00 charge already has States approval, but in light of the desire to both extend and simplify the current scheme, the Department has held back from implementing it and considers it necessary to refer the matter back to the States for formal approval before introducing a charge.

Accordingly, it should be noted that Residents Parking Permits will remain free of charge for the present. However, the Department anticipates submitting a report to the States later this year and, if approved, charges would be introduced shortly thereafter.
