Wednesday 08 May 2013

Guernsey's new Rolling Electronic Census is now a step closer with the appointment of local company, Digimap Ltd, who will be supplying the IT system.

Digimap Ltd was selected via a competitive tender and the final business case has recently been approved by the Treasury & Resources Department Board. The project now moves into its implementation phase.

The Project remains on track for completion in 2014 and an expanded population bulletin will be published annually by the Policy Council from 2015 onwards.

The whole project will be delivered for less than the cost of one census and the on-going support costs will be approximately half the cost of running a census every five years. In addition to the cost savings, socio-demographic data will be available much more frequently.

Helen Walton, Rolling Electronic Census Project Manager, States of Guernsey, said,

"This Project continues to offer exciting prospects. It will provide important information relating to our population more frequently and efficiently.

Digimap Ltd is a local company that have developed successful IT systems for States Departments in the past and are well versed in the data security aspects, which are paramount to this project. They have a history of delivering projects on time and on budget and we are looking forward to working with them."

Colin Le Conte, Managing Director of Digimap Ltd said,

"We are delighted to have been chosen for this prestigious project. As a Guernsey company, employing local staff, we feel it is important local companies show they can compete with companies from the UK and further afield in terms of knowledge, expertise and cost. It is great recognition of the success of other projects we have undertaken in the past.

We also fully appreciate how important the Rolling Electronic Census is to the Government and people of Guernsey.

Digimap specialises in digital mapping and Geographic Information Systems, enabling our customers to use spatial information to analyse their data. This will be particularly useful for analysing demographic data by parish, voting district or school catchment area for example. We look forward to bringing our expertise to this project, and helping the States of Guernsey gain new insights from their existing data assets."

The 2012 edition of the Annual Population Bulletin, which contains basic information on the population demographic, births, deaths, immigration and emigration, is now available www.gov.gg/population.
