Transport Strategy Consultation

Thursday 23 May 2013

The Environment Department has, today, released its Transport Strategy consultation document which is now available from many States buildings, Douzaine Rooms, Doctors Surgeries and Libraries as well as online. The consultation document is designed to set out many of the key transport issues that face the island in the hope that it will prompt thought, debate and public feedback.

Environment Minister, Deputy Domaille said "A Working Group led by two of my colleagues has spent much time looking at the problems that we face and the opportunities for change. They have spoken to numerous groups with a specific interest in on island transport and have surveyed many households as well as some students in order to get their feed in. This work has enabled us to put together some hard data as well as some survey statistics which is now presented in the consultation document. But most importantly the document which is very readable simply invites comments from the members of the public. This is a true consultation we have done our utmost to set out the issues in a way that will enable proper informed debate."

Deputy Domaille added "The Transport Strategy has been one of those perpetual items on the States agenda which has never been satisfactorily resolved. If ever the time was ripe to set out a new Strategy it is now, but unless people engage with the consultation process, unless people tell us what they think, then the opportunity will be wasted. We have made the report very accessible so now it is down to the people of Guernsey to get involved. The consultation period ends on 21st June after which time the Environment Department will take some months to analyse all the responses and put together a package of proposals for consideration by the States. We are very hopeful that we will be able to have a highly constructive States debate before the year is out and that a clear direction will be set so that this Government will have a good two years in which to implement many of the work streams that will inevitably result from whatever proposals are put forward."
