Guernsey's Commerce & Employment Minister at the Labour Party Conference

Tuesday 24 September 2013

The UK opposition's understanding of Guernsey - and its relationship with the UK - has been strengthened by a series of meetings at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton. Guernsey's Commerce and Employment Minister, Deputy Kevin Stewart, attended the conference, and met with politicians and policy advisers from across the Labour Party.

Deputy Stewart said:

"Whether Labour are in government or in opposition after the UK's General Election in 2015, they will clearly influence the political debate in the UK. I have met with, among others, representatives of their Treasury team, their Business team, their Energy team, and briefly with party leader Ed Mililband. There is a growing understanding of who we are and what we do - and why we are good for the UK's long-term economic competitiveness.

"I have also been able to meet business leaders at the Conference. I am pleased that businesses understand the value of Guernsey to UK plc and the UK's growth agenda."

Deputy Stewart held a number of joint meetings with Jersey's Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf.

Deputy Stewart said:

"Philip and I have worked hard to demonstrate that the Channel Islands should be seen by the Labour Party as part of the long-term solution to the UK's economic issues, and not as part of the problem."
