The Policy Council's Disability and Inclusion Strategy is to be debated by the States in November.
The Strategy aims to improve the lives of disabled Islanders, together with the lives of family members and friends who provide informal care and support in Guernsey.
Deputy Peter Harwood, the Chief Minister, pointed out:
"The Strategy aims to improve attitudes towards disabled Islanders and carers to make sure they can play their full part in Island life. The specific actions within the Strategy, which include legislative changes and a significant improvement in the availability of information about support and services, mark the beginning of a long term commitment to making sure everyone in Guernsey feels included".
Deputy Le Tocq, Chair of the Policy Council's Social Policy Group explained:
"I want to invite all disabled Islanders and carers to a meeting on Monday 21 October between 19:00 and 21:00 at Le Murier School where I will explain what having a Disability Strategy would mean for Guernsey. It is intended as an early opportunity to share information about the Strategy specifically with those people most directly affected by it."
"The Policy Council's Social Policy Group is grateful to Health Information Guernsey, Mind Guernsey, the Guernsey Disability Alliance and the States' Champion for Disabled People for representing the views of disabled people and carers in throughout the Strategy's development. We are also grateful to those States Departments whose representatives worked together to shape the Strategy, assisted by a representative of the primary care practices. "
If anyone would like any further information about the meeting please contact Carol Le Page, the Strategic Social Policy Officer on 717046. The meeting for disabled Islanders and carers is due to take place on Monday 21 October between 19:00 and 21:00 at Le Murier School.
