Media Enquiry from Damian Wrigley, Guernsey Press:
In regards to the hedge-veg boxes near the L'Ancresse bus stop, they have been voted to be removed at a Vale parish meeting. One of the Douzenier's said they had been in contact with the Environment department about the issue previously, but was told it was nothing it could deal with. Can you please find out under what circumstances the department can act against such hedge-veg stalls, why it can or cannot act against complaints when they are on public property and if it is aware of the issue being raised. Please add any other comments the department thinks appropriate.
Environment Department response:
The hedge veg stalls selling locally grown produce at Les Mielles Road have been in situ for many years and for that reason the Department is unlikely to be able to take effective enforcement action under the Land Planning and Development Law in respect of fruit, flowers and/or vegetable sales. The Department has, however, previously successfully prevented the display of other items such as golf balls, packaged bird feed and refuse bags.
The Department does investigate all complaints, whether on private or public land, but must respond to complaints within the limitations of the legislation and the resources available.
