A problem has been identified with the ventilation hoods of the air handling system in operating theatre 4 at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital.
Inspections undertaken by the Estates Team indicate that the problem affects the seal that the filters are embedded in.
As a precautionary measure, this operating theatre was closed yesterday in order to allow for thorough assessment of the problem. It is expected that the theatre will need to remain closed this week. At the earliest possible opportunity, this weekend, specialist contractors will be on the island to commence the necessary remedial work.
This unexpected closure of operating theatre 4, which is dedicated to orthopaedic surgery, resulted in the postponement of one operation yesterday and four today. Orthopaedic surgeons have been consulted and HSSD will work closely with them to ensure that any disruption to patients can be minimised.
Alternative arrangements will be made for emergency orthopaedic surgery to take place in theatre 2, while theatre 4 is out of action.
There may be a knock-on impact on some patients' treatment. Anyone who is affected will be contacted directly by HSSD with apologies for any inconvenience caused.
