Access for the elderly and disabled to view the Christmas lights

Wednesday 20 November 2013

The Environment Department is reminding members of the public about the seasonal dispensations that it is again offering this year for driving through some prohibited streets in the Town area to view the Christmas lights. These are intended for the benefit of the elderly and disabled.

As the Department's Traffic and Transport Services Manager explains:

"For a number of years now, the Department has granted a general permission for members of the public to drive up through Le Pollet or down Smith Street and into the High Street or from Mansell Street into Mill Street so that members of the elderly and disabled communities can view the Christmas lights. There is no need to call the Department's offices for a permit. However, I must stress that this permission is only open for vehicles carrying persons of pensionable age or disabled passengers. In addition, this concession only applies on Sunday to Wednesday evenings between the hours of 18:00 and 22:00 and between Sunday 1 December 2013 and Wednesday 1 January 2014."

Drivers must only travel towards the direction of the Town Church when travelling along Le Pollet or the High Street. Drivers are also reminded that the above listed roads are subject to a 12mph speed limit.
