Environment Department response to media enquiry from BBC Radio Guernsey.
BBC Radio Guernsey enquiry:
I would like to get a comment from someone with regards to coastal erosion from the recent bad weather.
Are there likely to be landslides?
How bad is the erosion?
It would be interesting to know whether the environment team get called out to more problems with manmade structures than erosion.
Environment Department response:
The Environment Department is not aware of any landslides on land it administers.
As already reported, there was some erosion and a breach to the L'Eree shingle bank, which was repaired. There has also been some damage/loss to the sand dunes at areas such as Grandes Rocques. These will continue to be monitored. However, these are likely to repair naturally.
The Department can confirm that it deals with more issues in relation to manmade 'coastal' defences compared to natural 'soft' defences. This is not surprising given that 'hard' coastal defences are in front of what would be the normal coastline in order to protect the assets that have been built behind them.
