Coastal Defences - Update

Friday 07 March 2014

The Environment Department can confirm that the temporary protection rock armour to the damaged coastal wall at Vazon, Grande Mare, has performed well.

The work to install the rock armour on the seaward side of the wall, infill to the crater on the landward side and restoration of the car park for public use was completed in 14 hours on Tuesday 4th March. The Department would like to express its appreciation to all the staff involved from States Works, Bob Froome Ltd and Ronez who were involved in the operation.

The temporary protection rock armour will be regularly monitored by States Property Services Engineers to check for movement and any maintenance work will be undertaken as necessary. The public are advised not to climb on to the adjacent wall or on to the rock armour as it may move without warning.

Further information on the design and tender process for the repair to the Vazon breach will be issued to the media in due course.

No other defences sustained any significant damage over the high tides early this week but two steps at Saints Harbour were washed out on Tuesday. The stone has been retrieved by the stonemasons and repairs will be undertaken as tides allow.

The Environment Department can also confirm that there has been no change to the damaged section of coastal wall at Fermain since the high tides in early February. No further damage has occurred recently. The gabions (rock filled wire cushions) placed in January as temporary protection had washed out of position in the early February storms when the wall collapsed. People are advised for their safety not to walk on the beach close to the damaged area in case of any sudden movement of the soft cliff. Barriers have been placed at the slipway entrance since January advising of the closure as a precaution.
