Update - Vazon Sea Wall Repair

Tuesday 22 July 2014

Guernsey Press Enquiry:

In regard to our conversation, can the department please comment on the following:

- To what specification is the sea wall being repaired, is it likely to be stronger than before it collapsed?

- Does the department think it need be stronger in order to cope with more powerful storms?

- Are other sections of the wall being checked at the same time as the repairs, to see if they need reinforcing?

Please include any other information about the wall repair that the department would like to mention.

This is planned in for tomorrow's paper, so if you could please respond by 4pm today, I would be grateful. Can you also please acknowledge receipt of this email.

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department can confirm that the previous wall was built of granite rubble and (as advised in the media release of 9 July) the damaged section is to be rebuilt with reinforced concrete faced with granite.  It will be stronger than previously constructed.

All coastal defences are monitored by States Property Services engineers and the Department's staff; any necessary repairs are scheduled according to priority.
