Guernsey Press Enquiry:
We have questions regarding the damage of the wall at Fermain.
Is the department aware that the wall has been damaged further? If so, what has caused the latest damage?
Does it have an idea of how it is going to be repaired and when? How much will it cost? Will the further damage make it more expensive to repair?
Finally, if no work is done will the wall get worse?
I apologise that this enquiry is only just being sent in, but if we were able to have a response by the end of the day I would be grateful.
Environment Department Response:
The Environment Department is aware of further damage to the wall which occurred several weeks ago. The erosion of the cliff behind is likely to have been the major factor in this unsupported section falling. There is clear signage at the entrance to the beach and alongside the damaged section of wall advising the public to keep at least 10m away from the area.
States Property Services Engineers will be considering a number of options for the wall once the more urgent sea defence wall repairs are underway. It is unlikely that repair works at Fermain will be undertaken before the winter and until all options have been identified it is not possible to predict the cost. The section of wall which has fallen alongside the breach would have had to be taken down before any repair started so there is no additional cost to the repair.
