Coastal Litter Bins - Arson

Thursday 19 March 2015

Seven green plastic wheelie litter bins have been set alight in coastal car parks since 3 March.

Bins have been destroyed in overnight attacks at Belvedere viewpoint, Icart car park, Grande Rocques and Chouet.  The value of the bins is approximately £370.

Minor damage has been sustained to coastal grasslands and to a tarmac surface but there is significant risk of substantial damage through slow fires starting in grasslands.  Wider scale loss of coastal grasses and plants would significantly weaken the shallow soil structure and subsequent erosion could cause severe damage to sand dunes.

The Environment Department is asking the public to report any suspicious activity in any of the coastal car parks to the Police, Tel 725111.
