The Town Quay & South Esplanade re-open with new road layout

The Environment Department is pleased to report that following the completion of road resurfacing works earlier today the Town seafront will shortly be returning to two-way traffic.

The Town Quay was opened earlier this afternoon and following the pre-marking of the new road layout along North Esplanade the entire road is expected to open by 5.30pm. It is expected that the final thermoplastic markings will be painted in the next couple of days.

The Department would like to remind motorists of the principal changes that have been made to the road layout for both southbound and northbound traffic and to ask that they take extra care to ensure that they comply with these new requirements.

The key changes are as follows:

The introduction of a 20mph speed limit along the Town Quay;

For southbound traffic:

Motorists exiting the North Beach Roundabout onto North Esplanade will still have two traffic lanes available to them but once they have passed the signalised crossing will be advised, through signage and road markings, to move into the correct traffic lane depending on where they wish to travel:

1. The left lane (nearest to the sea wall) for access to Crown Pier only; and

2. The right lane for all traffic heading south.

The Quay is now a single southbound lane until after motorists have passed the filter-in-turn opposite the Town Church where it then returns to two lanes:

1. The left lane for southbound traffic and the slip road leading onto the Albert Pier; and

2. The right lane to access Cornet Street and Fountain Street.

For northbound traffic:

The short section of two-lane northbound carriageway adjacent to the Town Church has been reduced to single file to accommodate the improved informal crossing point and there is a slight dog leg bringing traffic back onto the existing northbound single road lane.

Additional warning signs have been placed on the approaches to these areas to remind motorists that a new road layout is in place.
