Update - Sea Wall Repairs

Friday 15 May 2015

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

There seems to have been some good progress on the seawall repairs over the last few weeks (workers have been spotted at Havelet and Longstore working on the walls).

I was keen to get an update on what sites are being worked on, what is being done and when it will be completed?

Also, are there any other repairs programmed to take place soon?

Is there any news on what work could take place at Fermain?

Are these repairs still from the damage caused during the early 2014 storms?

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department can advise that so far this year (to 17th April) repairs to damage at 17 coastal defence sites have been completed.  These include: Bordeaux Harbour wall;  Vazon - walls opposite Grande Mare, near Fort Hommet car park, walls at Richmond; Perelle slipway and steps; Fermain moorings; Rocque Poisson wall south of slipway; Chouet rock armour; undermining at La Lague; Repairs to shingle banks at L'Eree, Les Banques and Grande Havre; and underpinning of a wall at La Valette.  The majority of these repairs are to damage sustained during storms in 2014.

Repair works are currently underway at St Georges Esplanade and at Havelet.  Further works are scheduled at Perelle, Vazon, and Havelet over the next few weeks.

There are several options with varying estimated costs for the repair of the wall at Fermain.  The options for Fermain, along with several other areas of coastal defence requiring major repair, will be considered under the States Capital Investment Portfolio (SCIP) process which is administered by the Treasury and Resources Department.  As part of this process it is likely the Environment Department will be required to submit a States Report to enable full consideration of the repairs at Fermain and other coastal defence sites in order that the States may assure that value for money for all these repairs is achieved and that the repairs are given appropriate priority against other capital projects.

Additional Questions from Guernsey Press:

Can I check what work is being carried out/will be carried out at St Georges Esplanade, Havelet, Perelle and Vazon?

Also, will the recommendations for Fermain hopefully go to the States later this year?

Environment Department Response:

Pointing repairs are being carried out at all these locations.

Yes.
