Update - Speed Humps by St Andrews Church

Tuesday 04 August 2015

Media Enquiry from Guernsey Press:

We wanted to speak to the department regarding the speed humps by St Andrew's Church. Now that St Andrew's Primary School has closed, are there any plans to remove them? I understand they were installed as a traffic calming measure as there were concerns over the safety of the junction? Also are there any plans to change the filter or any other aspect of the layout?

Could the department provide a history of the when the speed humps were first installed and when changes were made, as I understand the speed humps were replaced with 'full-width tables'?

Would it be possible to have a response by the end of today?

Environment Department Response:

In 2005 the Environment Department introduced a traffic calming scheme for St Andrews Primary School to assist with the safety of pedestrians crossing the main road from the Church car park to the lane linking with the school.  The scheme involved the installation of speed cushions of the type installed at Courtil St Jacques which were effective in calming traffic but it was noted from feedback and monitoring that some motorists were choosing to drive around the cushions.  In 2009 the Department agreed to remove the speed cushions and introduce an alternative calming scheme that involved construction of a full width raised table on the east-bound approach and installation of a filter at the junction of Route de St Andre and L'Ecluse to calm west-bound traffic flow.  There are no current plans to remove any of these traffic calming measures, particularly as the future of the former school site is, as far as the Traffic Services Unit aware, undecided at this time.
