Update - removal of additional parking spaces at the Bridge (additional questions)

Monday 14 September 2015

Media Enquiry from Island FM:

A few more questions please:

Was this announced to the public,  before the changes were made? If not, why not?
I noticed a disabled space - at the end of the parking along the shop side of the Bridge has been removed and replaced with the new unloading bay. How does this fit in with efforts elsewhere to improve transport for disabled islanders under the Transport Strategy?

Environment Department Response:

The Environment Department advertised that it was considering making changes to the un/loading arrangements at the Bridge towards the end of last year through the placement of signs on site and where legislation would need to be changed, additionally through notices in the Guernsey Press.  Submissions from interested parties were considered by the Board before it was decided to proceed with the scheme and responses sent out indicating why the Department has decided to make changes, including increasing the amount and size of full-time un/loading bays.

Following the decision of the Board, there was a delay in drafting the legislation to bring about the changes but once this was completed it was  advertised in the Gazette section of the Guernsey Press on 1st September.  Given the relatively few short term spaces that that have been removed to accommodate the un/loading bays in comparison to the overall level of short term parking in the Bridge area, the previous responses sent to interested parties and the legislative advertisement in the Press, no separate media release was issued on this occasion.

With regard to the suggestion that there has been a loss of a disabled parking space to accommodate the scheme, this is not the case as it has been relocated to near the end of Bridge Avenue.
