The first phase of a website designed to provide information and assistance for Islanders about services provided by the States and charitable organisations goes live today.

www.signpost.gg provides a parents and carer's guide to support, services and activities for children with disabilities in Guernsey. The website will be developed over time with information for disabled adults and carers, coming later this year.

Co-designed with all the charitable organisations featured, the website has been developed by the States Disability Officer, Caroline Mullins.

"For some time now disabled people and carers have asked for easily accessible information about support services and activities," said Mrs Mullins.

"In response to these requests, and as a key part of the implementation of the Disability and Inclusion Strategy, I have been listening to the ideas and thoughts of disabled people, carers and charities. They have explained the types of information they need and how the website should look. All of these suggestions have been taken into account when designing the new site, with the aim of ensuring it is accessible and provides practical information.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of the States' departments, charities, disabled people and carers who have helped in the development of this site. It is your information that has made this website become a reality."

Stephen Langford, Head of Government Strategy and Business for the Policy Council, added:

"Not knowing what services are available or how to access them was raised in the public consultations on the Children and Young People's Plan and the Supported Living and Ageing Well Strategy, both of which are debated by the States next month.  This website is the first time information from across the island has been brought together in one place in an easily accessible format.  It should make a real difference to anybody seeking to know who to go to for advice and practical support."

Karen Blanchford, Executive Director of the Guernsey Disability Alliance, said:

"Our members have consistently told us that they find the support system in Guernsey difficult to navigate.  That's why improving the way information is provided is a fundamental part of the States Disability and Inclusion Strategy.  The Signpost.gg website is a very welcome first step and we would really encourage parents, and anyone who is involved with supporting children with disabilities, to use it and let the Disability Officer know if there is anything that needs to be added."

Debbie Aldous, Chair of Wigwam Support Group said:

"Wigwam is absolutely delighted to see Signpost.gg go live. The website will be of huge benefit to parents and families of children with additional needs who are looking for information about help and support on the Island. It is very easy to use, providing clear information and contact details all in one place."

If members of the public would like give their feedback about site they can email: disabilityofficer@gov.gg or telephone: 717000
