The Visitor Economy
What is the visitor economy? Are YOU part of it? Why does it matter?
A visitor economy is not only the core services of transport, accommodation and hospitality, but includes a host of other businesses that contribute to the overall visitor experience on Guernsey.
If any of your income derives from visitors, or people who make their income from visitors; you are part of it.
A healthy visitor economy is very important to a small self-reliant state like the Bailiwick, as it sucks in "new" money from outside the islands. It doesn't stop there; this money then cascades down through the local economy with a multiplier effect that adds value for everyone. The island would literally be a much poorer place without its visitors.
It's not rocket science, just common sense - the more visitors we can attract; the higher the quality of experience we provide; the more they choose to spend here as a consequence, the greater the benefit for us all. And there's more -Guernsey needs a vibrant and viable visitor destination to underpin many of the key infrastructure services and facilities we all take for granted, and which in turn make this a convenient and attractive base for the finance industry and other businesses. These include vital transport links, many activities, attractions and entertainments, as well as a superb selection of places to eat and drink.
Commerce & Employment Department has overall responsibility for tourism, and maintains a strong off -island marketing campaign under the VisitGuernsey brand. Persuading visitors to choose Guernsey as their holiday destination is only the first step in the process. Real long term benefits for the island accrue from securing repeat visits over time and, even more important, from positive word of mouth recommendation by satisfied customers, generating a positive and enduring reputation.
The Department is eager to engage with business to facilitate a quality and memorable visitor experience for everyone. Often, very small changes can produce surprisingly large rewards, and the sharing of ideas or experiences is always a good place to start. To succeed, it is vital the visitor economy is up to speed, and able to meet or exceed current and future visitor expectations in all areas.
The Department actively encourages planned quality development throughout the core sectors mentioned above. This development is driven by a combination of statutory regulation (of accommodation) and voluntary participation in a range of quality accreditation schemes, delivered by the Quality Development Team.
The related articles on this page explain these programmes in greater detail -one may suitable for your business. We don't claim a monopoly on good ideas, industry know-how or current best practice, and are always ready to listen to new suggestions and develop new partnerships.
