Horticulture in Guernsey
The origins of a horticultural industry in Guernsey goes back over 200 years when the first greenhouses (glass houses) were built to supply, what were then, delicacies and the first commercial crops were flowers and grapes.
Since this beginning a variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers, have been produced in response to changes in markets and circumstances. The Island is probably best known for its production of tomatoes (the "Guernsey Tom"), but whilst local tomatoes can still be found in shops and on roadside hedge stalls, the peak of production has now passed.
The horticultural industry on the Island continues to adapt to an increasingly competitive market and currently exports cut flowers for retail markets and plants (high value young plants and seeds) and there is a group of specialist growers producing high value niche crops for multiple outlets.
