Asbestos
Asbestos
Asbestos containing materials were used extensively in Guernsey during the past century. It is important that any person who carries out work where they may come across asbestos, or who intentionally works with the material, follows legal requirements in order to ensure that they, and persons who may be affected by the way they work, are not exposed to an unacceptable risk
The health hazards caused by asbestos are due to the minerals' physical and chemical properties and the diseases caused by exposure to asbestos fibres can not only cause suffering through illness, but also premature death.
Certain types of asbestos can only be removed by a contractor approved by the Health and Safety Executive and an approved contractor must complete an Asbestos Notification Form, which can be downloaded below, before commencing work.
For further advice on the assessment of risks from asbestos and the management and removal of asbestos, contact the Health and Safety Executive.
