Employing Young People
A common sense approach is required when employing young people.
The legislation in Guernsey is limited but it may be prudent to obtain verbal or written parental consent. A contract or written statement is also essential so that the young person knows what is expected of them at work.
A young person should not be asked to perform duties which may endanger their health and safety, such as lifting heavy items; nor should the work interfere with their education. However, there are no laws in Guernsey which preclude an employer from engaging a young person for a summer or Saturday job for example.
