The Environment Department is reminding the public that fishing in Saumarez Park pond is not permitted.
This follows the death of a Cormorant on Friday 3 February 2012, which was found hanging in a tree near the pond after being caught up in a lead weight and line.
The bird was a regular early morning visitor to the pond and it is thought the fishing line and weight were picked up whilst it was feeding.
The pond is a valuable source of food for many wild birds and there are also approximately 25 pairs of Mallard and four pairs of Moorhen which regularly feed and roost around the pond.
An Environment Department spokesperson said:
"It's rare for the Department's staff to see fishing taking place though we know that it occurs by the litter found. The Cormorant's death is sad but a child or pet dog could easily be injured in this popular area of the Park by discarded hooks or line. We would appeal for people not to fish in the Saumarez Park pond and for anyone witnessing fishing taking place to immediately report it to the Environment Department."
