Akbar Khan, the Director of the Commonwealth Secretariat's Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division - and principal legal adviser to the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth - met with Guernsey politicians, officials, and Crown officers during a visit to the Island this week.
Mr Khan was in Guernsey to discuss to discuss a number of international legal issues and matters relating to the Commonwealth.
A Policy Council spokesman said:
"The Commonwealth is a successful and influential international body, of which Guernsey is an established part under the United Kingdom's membership, and with which we are seeking to enhance our engagement".
"Mr Khan's visit provided Guernsey with a useful opportunity to demonstrate the role that Guernsey can play in the Commonwealth - what we can learn from the Commonwealth and indeed what some of the smaller Commonwealth members may learn from us".
During his visit, Mr Khan also attended the swearing-in of Deputy Bailiff Richard McMahon, who was Mr Khan's lecturer in law during his period of study at the University of Reading.
Mr Khan is responsible for managing the division of the Commonwealth Secretariat that promotes the rule of law in support of the Commonwealth's mandate to enhance democracy, good governance and development in member countries.
