Environment Department response to media enquiry from Guernsey Press.
Guernsey Press enquiry:
I have done an article with Saltpans residents. A couple of them have said vehicles go to fast around the tight bends along the road and it is an accident waiting to happen. They say lorries speed too, Another resident said the road should be made 20mph because of the bends.
I was wondering if I could get a response from Environment to these comments?
Has Environment received complaints about speeding around the Saltpan corners?
Can anything be done about it?
Would Environment look at making the road 20mph?
Response:
Regrettably, there are a small minority of motorists that choose to drive inappropriately on the Island's roads. Any driver deemed to be travelling too fast for the type of road or conditions prevalent at the time, even if below the speed limit, can be reported for driving without due care and attention, or even driving in a dangerous manner. There have been a number of road traffic accidents in the Salt Pans over the years and whilst some of these have been attributable, at least in part, to driver speed the number of accidents is not demonstrably higher than in other similar neighbourhood roads.
In regards to the request for a 20mph speed limit, the Department has undertaken a review of the speed limits in Guernsey and a report was published, at which time comments were invited from members of the public. The findings of the public response were presented to the Environment Department Board and further work is now being undertaken to determine the way forward.
