Hard work across the Island behind Guernsey's record-breaking General Election

Thursday 19 April 2012

Guernsey's 2012 General Election's record turn-out was tribute to the hard work and diligence of Douzeniers, officers and volunteers across the Island, according to Election Registrar General and States Chief Executive Mike Brown.

Registrar General of Electors and States Chief Executive Mike Brown commented:

"This was a first-class election process from start to finish, handled expertly by Douzeniers, officers and volunteers. It should be remembered, as well, that it was not just about 18 April. A successful and lengthy awareness campaign and a well-executed logistics plan provided a professional and accurate framework for the 2012 General Election. All involved should be congratulated, and they have done a great service for the people of Guernsey in making sure that their voice was heard in a record turn-out. The work of the Deputy Registrars General, Paul Whitfield and David Robilliard and their teams has been first-rate."

Aside from ensuring that voting took place efficiently on a day of inclement weather and a record turn-out, the work put in place for the 2012 General Election included:

Deputy Registrar General of Electors and Chief Officer of the Home Department Paul Whitfield commented:

"The election team have done a fantastic job, culminating in the record turn-out.  There was an attractive online registration and election information web site, as well as the awareness-raising campaign. There was an extensive 60+ venue road show campaign that visited all schools and colleges as well as key public community places such as shopping and garden centres and residential homes.  And not only was the turnout above 71 per cent, but also nil amendments due to administrative inaccuracies were needed to be made."

Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Trott commented:

"Those of us who were candidates in the General Election greatly appreciate the effort and hard work that goes into this - on the day itself, and in the preceding weeks and months. The hard work of the Douzeniers, officers and volunteers has ensured that the people of Guernsey's voice has been heard. To all involved, thank you for your hard work."
