What to do if your right to live in Guernsey was based on your old job

If you hold an employment-related housing licence of less than 15 years' duration, and you lose your job before the licence has reached its expiry date, your licence will become invalid when your employment ends and you will normally be expected to leave the Island.

If you want to stay in Guernsey, you could move into Open Market Part A accommodation because you don't need a housing licence to live in this type of property.

You could also consider making an application for a non-employment-related housing licence (sometimes called a 'compassionate' housing licence), but you should note that it is not usual for this type of licence to be issued to a person who has held an employment-related housing licence of less than 15 years' duration.

If you hold a 15-year employment-related housing licence but lose your job and want stay in Local Market housing in Guernsey before you have worked for the full 15 years of the licence, you will need to make an application for a non-employment-related housing licence (sometimes called a 'compassionate' housing licence).

If you have held an employment-related housing licence for at least ten years when you lose your job, then your application for a non employment-related housing licence will usually be successful. You can contact Housing Control with details of your own specific circumstances if you want more advice.
