Carer's Allowance is a weekly benefit intended for anyone who stays home to care for someone who has a disability and needs a lot of attention or supervision by day or night.

Payment of the allowance is dependent on the following conditions:

  • The person you are looking after must be in receipt of Severe Disability Benefit 
  • You must spend at least 35 hours per week looking after the disabled person
  • You must be over 18 years of age
  • You must not be receiving Unemployment Benefit, Maternity Allowance or an incapacity benefit
