'Carers Coming Together'

'Carers Coming Together ' is an organisation based at Les Cotils Christian Centre which provides at least three different regular events for carers a month with additional 'special events' throughout the year. All who care for sick or disabled relatives on a long term basis, either at home or supporting them in residential care are made welcome. Although most carers take on their unpaid role readily it is recognised that the restrictions of a long term 24/7 commitment takes its toll on health and emotional wellbeing. The need to 'keep going' can be given a rejuvenating boost when there is a pleasurable break to look forward to! Visit the 'Carers Coming Together' website for more information and diary dates for the year.

Are you caring for a person with dementia?

The Guernsey Alzheimer's Association's social care afternoons take place at their Delancey Centre in the Rue des Monts, St Sampsons on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2pm. Carers are invited to bring with you those you are looking after, to enjoy the company. On Friday afternoons, fortnightly, you are able to leave your dependent safely at the centre while you go off for a couple of hours for time on your own. For more information visit the Guernsey Alzheimer's Association website.

Day care, support groups and social activities

Information about day care, support groups and social activities available to adults in Guernsey is available to download at the bottom of this page.

Carers' assessment

Carers are entitled to an assessment of their own needs. If you are a carer and would like an assessment of your needs you can refer yourself for an assessment by contacting the Community Services, Referral Coordinator using the contact details below.

Respite and Sitting services

Referrals will be accepted from all carers of adults who wish/need to have a break from their responsibilities. G.P.'s, hospital staff, social workers, other agencies, and self referrals are accepted by the Community Services, Referral Coordinator.

An assessment of need will have to be undertaken to receive respite or the sitting service.

Respite Care

Respite care is a service that offers carers a break from the ongoing responsibility of caring for an ill, frail or disabled adult who is being looked after at home, by providing a short stay in either Extra Care Housing, Residential home, Nursing home or Hospital for the cared for person. Service users who are registered with the Learning Disability Services will receive their respite from that service.

For more information download the leaflet at the bottom of this page.

Sitting Service

If you need a break from caring, the sitting service could provide the opportunity for you to have some time to yourself. A sitter could look after the person you care for. A break can allow you to do some of the things you cannot do whilst you are caring. Perhaps you would like to catch up with friends and family, attend appointments, do some errands or just have a rest.

The normal weekly allowance for sitting is: 4 hours day time, or a maximum of 2 nights per week as assessed by a professional in a crisis or high care needs situation.

For more information download the leaflet at the bottom of this page.

Other Services

Other services are also available from Community Services or from other Professional and Voluntary agencies. Information about these can be found under 'Other Services' on the 'Community Services'page.
