Minimum Wage Consultation
CONSULTATION ON MINIMUM WAGE LEGISLATION
The Commerce and Employment Department is committed to carrying out a full consultation to assess attitudes, from a wide range of respondents, on the possible introduction of Minimum Wage legislation for Guernsey.
Earlier this year I was pleased to give a commitment to the States, that this Department would give priority to investigating this topic with a view to reporting back to the States as soon as possible, and the questionnaire and consultation document which accompanies this letter will play a very important part in gathering information to inform this process.
The success of Guernsey’s economy means that the Island is not generally seen as a “low pay area”. However, minimum wage controls do have the potential to impact on sectors of the economy which might traditionally be associated with lower pay rates. Despite such concerns, the Department believes that there are a number of very positive benefits for the Island and its workforce through the introduction of a minimum wage, and particularly so if the arrangements, should they be introduced, are handled in a practical and realistic manner.
The Department would be grateful to receive your comments in the form of a completed consultation questionnaire to enable it to assess the range of views on this important topic.
Your time spent reviewing and completing the attached documents will provide good basic background information and allow you to not only answer the specific questions, but to flesh out your answers with further written comment if you wish; which of course we welcome. All views expressed will be taken as confidential, unless you indicate that you are willing to allow comments to be used as set out at the back of the questionnaire document.
I should like to thank you in advance for your attention to this important consultation process and I look forward to receiving your completed questionnaire.
Yours sincerely
