NOW SHOWING:

St Peter Port: past and present
Drawings by Robert Reed

25th July - 11th September 2008

An exhibition showing for the first time in public facsimile drawings (with watercolour washes) of two streets in St Peter Port. These townscapes, from the late 1960's, were commissioned by the Environment Department and were drawn by the designer Robert Reed while he was attending the Central School of Art in London. Alongside these long landscape drawings there are photographs of some of the same buildings as they are today.

"The passage of time seems to have lent the work a quality not apparent to me then...the frail quality if the line and the slightly faded watercolour treatment imbues it with the rather delicate feel of a Victorian topographic work, the long frieze format giving it the suitable eccentricity of that age. Looking back, I didn't realise that I was capturing a moment in time that would become part of the island's rich visual archive." Robert Reed, June 2008.
