Beach Barbecues

Information on holding a Beach Barbecue
  1. Small “family” barbecues of under 10 people do not need to contact the Environment Department but are reminded of their responsibility to leave the beach in a clean and tidy condition.
  2. Organisers of barbecues to be attended by between 10 and 50 people must contact the Environment Department on Tel: 717200 to check beach availability and provide details (see section 4).
  3. Barbecues to be attended by more than 50 people are considered to be 'Beach Events' and organisers must apply to the Department for permission.
  4. The following information must be provided for all barbecues:
    1. Name and address of organiser.
    2. The name of the beach on which it is intended to hold the barbecue.
    3. The date on which the barbecue is to held.
    4. The times from which you wish to hold the barbecue (between 6.00pm and midnight only).
    5. The approximate number of people attending.
    6. Any other information which might be relevant.
  5. Beach barbecues are only allowed on the Island's North and West coast beaches. Barbecues are not to be held on beaches on the South or East coasts (i.e. from Soldiers’ Bay to Pleinmont).
Standard Conditions

All litter generated by those attending a barbecue must be cleared from the beach before 9.00 am the following day.

As a consideration to other beach users, barbecues and/or bonfires must not be lit anywhere on the beach before 6pm. Bonfires lit after this time must be below the high water mark for the next high tide, and must be completely extinguished after the event. Timber containing nails or similar materials must not be used.

Disposable barbecues must not be placed in coastal litterbins until they are completely cold. They should not be left or buried on the beach as they pose a significant hazard to beach users.

Following a number of injuries caused to beach users from broken glass, glass containers must not be used on the beach or surrounding areas.

The Beach Code

Barbecue organisers are reminded of the Beach Code.

  1. Show respect for all other beach users.
  2. Do not play loud music.
  3. Take your litter home with you or place it in a litterbin.
  4. Do not take any glass items onto the beach.
  5. Avoid disturbing wildlife.
  6. Ensure that you know the times of high tide.
