Health Promotion Unit

The role of the Health Promotion Unit is to actively promote healthy lifestyles within the Bailiwick of Guernsey and to help people make healthy choices. We also aim to support anyone else who is involved in health promotion to deliver their service as effectively as possible.

We design and implement a variety of health promotion programmes and activities, offer support and specialist advice to other health educators and organise training sessions on all aspects of healthy lifestyles. We also advise on the formulation of plans and policy development and have a comprehensive resources library which is free and open to anyone to use. It includes stocks of books, teaching packs, videos and DVDs, anatomical models, replica foods and audio visual equipment including display boards, overhead projectors and screens.

We keep information on all aspects of health but our priority areas are reducing smoking, preventing heart disease and cancer, reducing obesity, promoting physical activity, stress management, reducing childhood accidents and promoting health education in schools. We also support several other projects including the Cardiac Rehabilitation Courses, the Lifefit Exercise on Prescription programme,  the Walk your Way to Health programme and the Quitline Smoking Cessation Service.

Quitline

Quitline is the Guernsey Helpline service for people who want support and advice about stopping smoking. It provides an answer phone service, although all calls are returned within 24 hours of being received. They offer  friendly help and encouragement and will talk through practical ways to quit - this may include advice on how to beat cravings and information about stop smoking products. Anyone interested in stopping smoking or helping someone else to stop can call Quitline - including parents, friends, relatives, pregnant mothers, GPs and health professionals  - on telephone number 233170.
