FAQs
Why have you stopped me?
Customs officers are empowered by the Customs and Excise (General Provisions) (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 1972, as amended, to stop and question any person entering or leaving the Island with respect to their baggage or anything carried with them. Customs officers are also empowered to search any item that a person has with them.
Another reason for you being stopped may be because Customs Officers regularly conduct risk assessment exercises in all areas of their work. This will of course include stopping members of the travelling public. The Customs and Immigration Service is unable to give reasons why it may have stopped a particular person during a risk assessment exercise, as this may result in the disclosure of sensitive techniques. It is not deemed to be in the public interest for such techniques to be made public.
