The makeup of the Service is such that, because of retirements, there are guaranteed vacancies for most years in the near future.

Most Firefighters join the Service for a variety of reasons. Some like the prospect of shift work, for others it is the appeal of a public service. Whatever the reason, the financial rewards are such that you will never be rich but you should be able to maintain a reasonable standard of living. At the end of your service, (Firefighters normally retire at 55 years of age) there is a pension, (which is contributory) equivalent to up to half of your final salary, and a lump sum of up to 1½ times your final salary.
