All prisoners are assessed on reception. There are limited detoxification facilities in the health care centre; and drug education courses are held in the prison. In addition Drug Concern runs drug awareness and drug action courses together with individual counselling

The prison is represented on the Chief Officer Drug Strategy Group.

There is a very strict policy on preventing drugs entering the prison: measures include mandatory and voluntary drug testing of prisoners, the use of drug dogs and searching of visitors.

Visitors and prisoners found smuggling drugs into the prison are reported to the Police. Visitors who do so are subsequently banned from visiting the Prison and offending prisoners are thereafter only allowed visits under "closed" conditions (where no physical contact is possible) for a period of at least three months.
