Home Improvement loans

The Department administers the States Home Loans Scheme, which is funded by the Housing Development and Loans Fund managed by the Treasury and Resources Department.

Loans available for repairs and improvements to dwellings are mostly used by elderly persons of limited means. All loans are subject to variable rates of interest related to the borrower's means and so are generally below commercial borrowing rates.

Who Qualifies for States Home Loans?

States Home Loans are available for persons who are residentially qualified under the Housing Control Law and who have lived in Guernsey for the five years immediately prior to the Loan being granted.

What is an Improvement Loan?

Home improvement loans (for house repairs) are intended for anyone who cannot afford bank borrowing to repair or improve their home.

Where can an Improvement Loan be Utilised?

Improvement Loans can be made available to cover a wide range of work including re-roofing, replacement of windows, installation of damp-proof courses, re-plastering, construction of bathrooms and kitchens where none exist, cesspits and facilities for disabled people. Home improvement loans are available to finance repairs to dwellings owned by elderly persons of limited means, who can benefit from very low repayment terms and, in extreme cases, only a small amount of interest is payable during the borrower's lifetime.
