Water Quality

In order to provide clean, safe drinking water it is neccessary for Guernsey Water to carefully monitor the water catchment area.

Monitoring the Island's water catchment area

The Water Quality section’s main role is to investigate, detect, monitor and remediate pollution. Scientific field-testing and regular analysis of the Island’s streams and reservoirs is carried out to monitor the quality of the water and also to detect potential pollution. The technicians are also responsible for upholding and applying “The Prevention of Pollution (Guernsey) Law, 1989” and “The States Water Supply (Prevention of Pollution) Ordinance, 1966”.

In recent years, Guernsey Water has been raising the public’s awareness to the importance of protecting the Island’s water resources from pollution. Part of this campaign is to regularly publish information and guidance leaflets in the media. If you wish, you can download the latest guidance on the disposal of water from domestic swimming pools or the use of herbicides by clicking on the links to the right hand side of this page.

Guernsey Water regularly receives enquiries from people who have bought dishwashers and are advised to find out the water hardness to set the washer’s salt setting. You can find out this information by clicking on the link to the right of this page. Please note that this is guidance information only. Guernsey Water does not accept liability for damage to dishwashers or poor wash quality caused by the incorrect dosing of salt.

If you are unsure, or require further advice on any of this information, please contact the Water Quality section where staff will be happy to assist you further.
