Licence Categories
The following table shows in summary the description for the main categories of licence.
Please contact the Department if you are unsure about the category you will require for any any particular vehicle or if you require further details on category restrictions.

| A1 | Light motorcycle with a cubic capacity exceeding 50cc but not exceeding 125cc and of a power not exceeding 11 kilowatts. | 17 (or 16 if a full category P licence has been held for at least 12 months) |
| A | Motorcycle with a cubic capacity exceeding 125cc | 18 (or 17 if a full category A1 licence has been held for at least 12 months) |
| B | Any motor vehicle, other than one falling within category A, with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3,500 kilograms and having not more than 8 seats in addition to the driver’s seat including such a vehicle drawing a trailer having a maximum authorised mass which does not exceed 750 kilograms OR A combination of a motor vehicle in category B and a trailer, where the maximum authorised mass of the combination does not exceed 3,500 kilograms and the maximum authorised mass of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the motor vehicle. | 17 |
