Registering a Vehicle

To Register a vehicle in Guernsey the following criteria has to be met:

  • The vehicle must be in Guernsey.
  • The vehicle must have been declared at, and cleared through, Guernsey Customs
  • The vehicle must be primarily for circulation on the roads of Guernsey.
  • The registered owner of the vehicle must be a resident of Guernsey
  • You must have your vehicle weighed in Guernsey, at the Public Weighbridge at British Fuels Ltd, or at Ronez Limited, situated at Le Hure Mare, Vale (unless your vehicle is new and registered by a local franchise agent).
  • If your vehicle is over 7'6¾" in width and/or over 31' in length then it is classed as an "oversize" vehicle in Guernsey. Please be aware that these vehicles cannot be freely circulated around the Island. You will have to apply for an oversize vehicle permit from the Traffic Office.
  • Please note that if your vehicle is a camper van you will need permission from the Planning Division of the Environment Department to register the vehicle.

At the time of Registration you will have to produce:

  • A completed application form (Form MV/ARV. 01) available from our Vehicle Registration and Licensing Department.
  • The certificate or cover note of Third Party Insurance which must be issued by a Guernsey Authorised Insurer. Details of authorised insurers are available from the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Division.
  • The weighbridge receipt.
  • The vehicle's security form (V55/1-4) must be surrendered. This document is produced by the vehicle manufacturer. If the vehicle is a used (second hand) vehicle imported into the Island it is necessary to produce the vehicle's original and current registration document. If the name in which the vehicle is to be registered is different from the last registered name on the vehicle documents then continuity of registered ownership must be shown, such as a bill of sale.
  • The correct fee must be paid.

You can make the application to register a vehicle at the Department premises in Bulwer Avenue, or by post as long as all of the above documentation is enclosed.

Registration of a Motorcycle

The same procedure should be followed as above, except that there is no need to have your motorcycle weighed or to produce a weighbridge receipt.

The application form to be completed is different [Form MV/ARC. 02] which is available from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Division.

Registration of Agricultural Vehicles

Vehicles to be used for agricultural purposes only, and mobile cranes, are also required to complete form MV/TF 09, which is available from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Division.
