Learning to Drive

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Division of the Environment Department is responsible for keeping a record of States of Guernsey driving licence holders and the details of their driving licence entitlement. Should you have any queries then please contact the Department on 01481 243400.

New Drivers

If you are taking to the roads for the first time, then below is a check list to help you get started.

  1. The first step is to apply for your Provisional Driving Licence in the category relevant to the vehicle that you would like to drive.
  2. Motorcyclists holding a provisional licence in categories P, A1, or A must not ride your motorcycle on a public highway unless you have successfully completed a training course for motorcyclists approved by the Department (Compulsory Basic Training or CBT) and have been issued with a certificate of completion.
  3. You will then be able to start learning to drive.
  4. The next step is to take a theory test.  You will find information on the theory test on this website through the link provided.
  5. You then need to successfully pass your practical test.
  6. Once you have completed all of the above, you will then be ready to apply for your first full driving licence.

Provisional Driving Licences

Please ensure that you carefully check the validity of your provisional licence.

Drivers of mopeds, motorcycles, agricultural tractors, road repairing machines, motorised tricycles, or quadricycles, or electically propelled vehicles within category L, must particularly be aware of when their provisional licence expires.

These licences are only valid for two years.  Once they expire then they cannot be renewed under any circumstances for another twelve months.

Supervision of Learner Drivers

Once you have received your provisional licence for a motor vehicle you can begin learning to drive on the roads.  Please remember, however, that you must be supervised in a motor vehicle by a person who has held a full driving licence for the same category of vehicle for at least one year.

You do not need to be supervised if you are driving a moped, a motorcycle, an agricultural tractor, a road repairing machine or a motorised tricycle or quadricycle (categories P, A1, A, F, G, or B1).

The same is true if you are driving an electrically propelled vehicle within category L, if it is only designed to be occupied solely by the driver.

Information about Learner Plates

  • It is important to ensure that you display L-plates while driving under a provisional driving licence.
  • It is an offence to reduce the size of a standard plate in any way and then display it on your motor vehicle or motorcycle.
  • Candidates for driving tests will be unable to take their test if they are not displaying legally sized L-plates on their vehicle.
  • L-plates can be obtained from most garage forecourts and motor accessory shops.
  • They must be displayed on the front and rear of your vehicle in a vertical or near vertical position on a flat surface.
  • L-plates that are wrapped around the forks of a motorcycle or mounted on the flat bonnet of a car are not permissible.
