Education & Learning

Classroom Picture 2

The Education Department is responsible to the States of Guernsey for the administration of education in Guernsey. Compulsory school age is from 5 to 16 years. Free primary education for children from 5 to 11 years of age is provided in infant, junior and primary schools with defined catchment areas. There are also a few private fee paying schools.

Nursery provision is being developed by the Education Department; in the meantime, children are usually admitted to school from the beginning of the school year in which they reach the age of 5 years.

The Education Department has responsibility for 10 primary schools, 2 infant schools, 1 junior school, 3 high schools and a co-educational Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre. In the private sector, The Ladies' College, Blanchelande College (a Roman Catholic School) and Elizabeth College (boys) take fee payers, with some States scholarship places awarded at the age of eleven. Alderney has two schools: St Anne's, an all-age school, and Ormer House, a private preparatory school for children aged between 2 - 13 years.

There is a secondary education selection test at 11 years. The majority of children will be awarded places at the high school which serves their catchment area. Approximately 25% of children, who achieve the appropriate level in the 11+ will be offered a place at either the Grammar School or the Colleges.

At age 16 all pupils in Guernsey are offered the opportunity to undertake further study in academic or vocational fields. These would normally result in the attainment of A Level, AS Level, BTEC or NVQ qualifications. These courses are either offered at the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre or the College of Further Education.

The Education Department also provides help and support for those studying higher education courses and operates a range of support services for children and young people including the Youth Service, Special Needs Support Services, Careers Service, Music Service etc.
