Guernsey Vetting Bureau
Employment Vetting Services
A key responsibility for the Department is to empower local employers to make more informed and ultimately safer recruitment decisions, particularly where an occupation involves contact with children and adults who through circumstances could be considered to be vulnerable, or where a higher degree of integrity for a role is required (e.g. law enforcement, legal services). Relevant local legislation therefore creates a criminal record check service for Bailiwick employers. This service was provided by Guernsey Police and could be used by any local employer that is empowered by the legislation to do so.
It has previously not been possible for employing organisations within the Bailiwick of Guernsey to utilise the services of the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The extension of Part V of the Police Act 1997 to include the Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) in 2010 has now made this possible.
In response to changes to the national vetting schemes in the UK and in order to maintain a consistent approach to vetting within the Bailiwick, it has become necessary for local organisations to utilise the DBS service. The Guernsey Vetting Bureau (GVB) has been established to facilitate access to DBS for local employers and other organisations, which provides Standard and Enhanced level Disclosures. Guernsey Police continues to provide Basic Disclosures to individuals for local employment purposes.
These pages provide further information on the categories of Disclosure Services for employment available in the Bailiwick and how you can access them.
