  • Applying for a provisional driving licence

    • To find out which driving licence categories you can apply for click here.
    • You can apply one month prior to reaching the minimum age for the category you are applying for.
    • To apply for your provisional licence, you will need to:
      • submit a completed driving licence application form;
      • submit a recent photograph to the following specification;
      • submit your existing valid Guernsey provisional driving licence, if applicable;
      • if you are applying for your first Guernsey driving licence or have not previously had your identity verified, submit your original passport OR a completed Identity Verification Form. If you are submitting an ID verification form you will also need to bring your birth certificate. If you post in your original passport, it will be returned to you via recorded delivery.  (If your identity has already been verified, a date will have been inserted in section 14 on the back of the plastic part of your driving licence).
    • We will contact you for payment if this is required.
  • Applying for a full driving licence after passing your driving test

    • To obtain a full driving licence you will need to:
      • submit a completed driving licence application form;
      • submit your current driving licence(s);
      • provide your practical driving test pass certificate (small green pass slip).
    • We will contact you for payment if this is required.
    • Driving licences usually run to the month before a decade birthday, e.g. 20, 30, 40 etc.   Therefore, if your current provisional driving licence runs to your next decade birthday, there is no charge for upgrading from a provisional to a full driving licence. If however, your provisional driving licence was due to expire before your next decade birthday, you will be charged the current fee per year up to your next decade birthday.
    • Please note:
      • If you wish to keep any remaining categories on your provisional driving licence, these can be applied for using the same application form, and will be reissued onto a new provisional driving licence.
  • Applying for a full driving licence after passing your driving test - online applications

    • Check if you are eligible for an online account by completing the following enquiry form:  https://gov.gg/trafficonlineservices
    • Online application process:
      • If you have already set up an account, login to https://traffic.gov.gg;
      • Enter your driving licence number and your password;
      • If you have forgotten your password, please click on the "Forgot password?" link and follow the reset instructions;
      • If you are unsure if you have set up your account, please contact us at https://gov.gg/trafficonlineservices (stating that you have passed your driving test) and we will advise you if you are eligible for online services.

      • If you wish to keep any remaining categories on your provisional driving licence, these can be applied for at the same time, and will be reissued onto a new provisional driving licence.
    • Once you have completed the online application, you will need to post the following to us before your new driving licence can be posted back to you:
      • your current driving licence(s);
      • your practical driving test pass certificate (small green pass slip).
  • Information for learner drivers

    • For information regarding categories P, A1 or A, please visit www.gov.gg/cbt.
    • If you are driving/riding a moped, a light motorcycle, a motorcycle, an agricultural tractor, a road repairing machine or a motorised tricycle or a quadricycle (categories P, A1, A, F, G or B1) under the terms of your provisional licence, you do not need to be supervised/accompanied by a full driving licence holder. The same is true if you are driving an electrically propelled vehicle within category L, if it is only designed to be occupied solely by the driver.
    • For B, C and D categories please remember that you may only drive a vehicle when you are being supervised by a person who has held a full driving licence in the relevant category for at least one year.
    • You will need to display "L" plates on the front and rear of your motorcycle or vehicle in a prominent position.
    • We recommend that you take driving lessons with a registered driving instructor. A poster listing the registered schools is available here:
    • You must pass a theory & practical driving test before you are able to apply for a 'full' driving licence.
    • Please note:
      • If you hold categories F, G, B1 or L you must pass the driving test in these categories within two years. Should you not do so you will be required to wait 12 months before a further provisional driving licence in these categories can be issued.
    • Further details on learning to drive can be found here.
