Friday 01 December 2023

On 27 - 28th November Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq and Deputy Nick Moakes represented Guernsey at the third Commonwealth and Trade and Investment Summit in London along with the Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, Rupert Pleasant. The event was attended by Heads of Government, Senior Ministers, and business leaders from across the Commonwealth for two days of sessions, meetings, and networking.

The business to Government Summit draws participation from across the 56 Commonwealth member nations and provides an opportunity to focus and discuss common Commonwealth matters at the mid-point between the Commonwealth Business Forum held in Kigali in the Republic of Rwanda and the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October 2024.

The 2023 Summit programme focused on the key economic challenges and opportunities facing the Commonwealth the areas in which the Commonwealth can help support new investment for emerging markets, help reduce barriers to trade and investment across the Commonwealth and help to drive growth in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) whilst strengthening collaboration across Commonwealth partner countries.

The Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit is developed and hosted by the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) of which the States of Guernsey is a strategic partner.

Minister for External Relations Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq said:

"The Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit provides an excellent opportunity to meet with other Ministers and Business Leaders from across the 56 Commonwealth countries to share and discuss matters of shared interests. This event is an important event in the calendar and presents the opportunity to represent Guernsey alongside the other 56 nations. Many of the Commonwealth nations share the same challenges as Guernsey, and in many cases, there are significant opportunities for Guernsey not only to engage and collaborate on mutual economic interests, but also support and share our expertise where relevant, especially to many of the smaller developing nations."

Deputy Nick Moakes Committee for Economic Development Lead for Financial Services and International Trade said:

"It was a privilege to represent Guernsey at the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit. During the event I met with a wide range of Political and business leaders from across the full spectrum of the Commonwealth. My key aims were to promote Guernsey's interests and discuss potential trade and investment opportunities."

Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Rupert Pleasant said:

"It was a pleasure to attend the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit along with Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq and Deputy Nick Moakes, to hear and meet with Ministers and world class speakers, and to reinforce Guernsey's position as part of this very important globally family."
