GCSE/Level 2 results released for 2021

Thursday 12 August 2021

Students across the Bailiwick received their GCSE and other Level 2 grades today, achieving an impressive set of results considering the challenging circumstances they have faced during the last two years.

There have been a great many success stories across our schools and the College of Further Education, part of The Guernsey Institute. Overall, 69.6% of students across the Bailiwick have achieved at least five A* - C/9 - 4 grades including English and maths. This is a credit to students and teachers throughout the islands.

Due to the challenges presented by the pandemic, and the differences in the way grades were awarded, caution should be taken in attempting to compare directly headline figures to previous years.

Assessments were carried out by teachers and quality assured in each school to determine final grades.

The new grading structure, using 9-1, rather than A*-G, continues to be phased in. While they are not directly comparable, a 4 is roughly equivalent to a C.

As in the previous two years, school leaders will be analysing the results under the new Guernsey Attainment 8 system, the results of which will be published in January alongside England.

All of the grades published so far are preliminary grades, which could be subject to change as a result of appeals processes. In addition, there are a small number of results for which results are not yet available.

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, said:

"Today's results are a testament to the hard work and resilience of all of the island's students at Level 2 or GCSE Level, who received their brown envelopes this morning after two years of learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus has had a huge impact on the way students have been able to study, however the results show that they have overcome these challenges and been rewarded for their perseverance. They could not have done this without the similarly hard work of school staff, who have once again had to deliver teacher assessed grades this year, and the Committee are extremely thankful for all of the profession's commitment in the last 24 months. Well done to everyone who has received their results today."

Liz Coffey, Executive Principal of the Secondary School Partnership, said:

"Congratulations to all our students for your achievements in what has been a challenging couple of years for your age group in particular.  I am sure you will be keen to join me in thanking everyone who has supported you throughout your education.   We are all eager to hear of your future success as you embark on your future destinations within education or employment."

Martin Winward, Headteacher of St Anne's School, Alderney, said:

"I am extremely proud of the achievements of all our pupils this year, they have been testament to true resilience given the on-going uncertainty presented to us all in light of COVID-19. Individual successes are grounded in the solid relationships fostered at our school, the dedication of staff and the diligent support of our parents. This is testament to our unique setting here at St. Anne's. I personally would like to thank all of our teachers from early years, infant, junior and secondary for their collective efforts in enabling pupils at St. Anne's to stride forward with confidence amidst such difficult, and unusual circumstances this year. The results are a true reflection of what we aspire for our young people, 'Inspired to Learn... Supported to Succeed'.
